Eighteen Scouts and three Scouters attended the “First Class Camping” which would have been better named “Scout Rank through First Class Camping”. We gathered at the church Saturday morning and traveled to French Creek State Park. The weather was way beyond excellent. Warm and clear with a cold night projected and an even warmer Sunday predicted. The first challenge was to cram all the gear and people in one van, two minivans and an SUV. We made it with zero room to spare mostly due to Mr. Ascoli volunteering to drive scouts and gear and help retrieve them Sunday morning. The second challenge was to find another Troop occupying our campsite when we arrived! They squatted on our site because someone was on theirs. No problem just take an empty site and set up, so we did. The Scouts set up camp and went on to cook lunch, work on all sorts of requirements for various ranks and to just generally have a lot of fun, get fried by the sun and play ultimate Frisbee in the beautiful weather. A big dinner was prepared and many Scouts played Capture the Flag, a favorite game, until 10:30 while others sat near the warmth of the campfire. After a very cold night we awoke to the sounds of Revelry from our bugler and another troop’s bugler (snooze alarm?) about ten minutes later. The Scouts prepared a tasty egg omelet breakfast and broke camp. We arrived back to Grace Lutheran about ten minutes late. I need to thank Mr. Ascoli for transportation, Mr. Fair and Mr. Drehobl for crowd control and helping with scout Skills. This event was expected to attract about ten Scouts, eighteen attending is even better! All of last years Newbies are now poised for their Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review to complete Second Class and many others are closer to First Class. Some of the New Newbies are now ready to advance to Scout Rank! A successful event thanks in part to our New SPL Colin and ASPL Kenny. A job well done by both youth and adult leaders. Thanks all!
