Well the skiing is over and winter gone, but with the winter storm on the 16th not quite gone! Our ski night at Spring Mountain was a success. All the attendees had a great time and went injury free. The follow up trip to the Hoffman Estate was a fantastic time with two days of spring skiing at Ski Shawnee’s 17th Annual Scout Weekend in what turned out to be decent weather without the predicted rain. The Scouts spent all day Saturday on the slopes barely taking time to come into the lodge for lunch. We did have two injuries. Early on Andy H. tore up both knees after a spill on his snowboard. The fact that he was skiing in a Kilt (yes, there will be pictures) may have made those wounds a bit worse. The Ski Patrol patched him up and Andy returned to the slopes. Late in the day while our Scouts were doing some unofficial racing Frankie R. took a big spill avoiding a non-Scout skier who wiped out in front of him. Frankie took out the protective netting around a “hydrant” (snow-making device) and crashed into the steel hydrant itself. This took place in sight of the Ski Patrol’s First Aid building. He was transported by toboggan and thoroughly checked out. He was pretty sore that evening but enjoyed most of his spaghetti dinner served by a local high school. Back at Hoffman’s Estate played a quick game of Manhunt. Sunday morning after breakfast and cleanup we returned to the slopes for more snowboarding and skiing. There were official Snowboard and Ski races held over the two days. There were several categories. Kyle G. took first place in the 16-17 year old Snowboard category. Congratulations to Kyle.
