Camp
Spencer was one of the best summer camp experiences I have had. Our campsite
was incredibly close to everything, so walking was really easy. The bug count
was relatively low, however, two wasps feasted on Bobby D. and Frankie R. All
of our schedules were filled, and everyone was busy. Some guys worked on a
combination of both COPE and Lost Pines, while other scouts such as myself
worked on merit badges.
My brother and I did some merit badges together, a counseler by the name of
P.J. taught both the camping and mammal study merit badges. P.J. was especially
entertaining because he tried to pose as a gangster. We all thought he was
funny.
Another popular counselor was the teacher of both Cit. in the World and
Cit. in the Nation. He went by his last name, which was Foster. He would
always make fires, even if there was hot weather. He almost never smiled, and
he had a very monotone voice. But, he was always into joking around and
commenting on many people's names. He was a lot of fun.
On Thursday morning, on the way to Handishop U.S.A., I saw something
wriggling in the thorn bush. I looked to see what it was, and it was a box
turtle, who looked like it had berries smudged all over its mouth. I picked it
up, and Everett insisted that I bring it to the Con. Ec. lodge where previously
three snakes were held. The counselors told me to put the turtle in a
watersnake cage. By the end of the day, the turtle and one of the other snakes
got free.
One day we were able to see a snake have lunch. The counselors put a dead
mouse in the tank, and saw the snake gradually devour the rodent. Then the
counselor said, "Slurp up the tail like spaghetti!"
One night, Everett C., Mark M., and I saw Indiana Jones in Raiders of
the Lost Arc. We had dry unbuttered popcorn, but you guys should know Mark
is the coolest of the newbies.
For those who missed camp, they missed a great deal on the candy. I tried
to give a five-minute speech on candy in my communications class, everybody
laughed so hard, and one guy barfed on my shoe and daypack. In conclusion, Camp
Spencer was and will always be a memorable experience.
