Camp Spencer was great. By popular demand we earned the White Elephant patch, by doing a polar bear swim for two mornings. I dealt with the cool water by just jumping in. This was a great exercise because it was the only time some of the troop had contact with water during the week.
The highlight of my experience was earning the archaeology merit badge. The main dig was around an old home called Manor House. It was originally owned and farmed by the daughter of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy. I found many artifacts such as bricks and pot shards, but the only artifact I kept was the top end of an old glass bottle of what I assume was whiskey.
I hope to make archaeology my life’s work. Someday I might be in Egypt or Greece. Nothing will replace the excitement of my first artifact at Camp Spencer.
The guys who missed going to camp missed some great food and some great times.
